ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 2
Compilation of projects that I have done during this semester
PROJECT 1: FAMOUS PEOPLE, FAMILIAR FACES, DIAGRAMMATIC ABSTRACTION (GROUP)
The main objective of the first project is to investigate and explore how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics-solid, planes, lines, and frames. Upon completion of the project we are able to achieve a level of understanding on the works assigned and be able to apply the idea and concept to our project later.
First of all, we were divided into several groups. We were given a famous architect and his famous work for us to do some research about it. We got Alvar Aalto and his Experimental House at Muuratsalo for this project. In the first part of this project, we had to make a video about him and his work. Here is the outcome from our research about it.
In the second part of this project, we had to do some research about the Muuratsalo Experimental House itself. The research was mainly about the architectural elements that could be extracted from the building such as hierarchy, symmetry, circulation, plan to section, massing, structure and geometry. We had to produce a set of 10 models to represent the element that had been extracted from the building. We also required to produce a complete set of architectural drawing of the Muuratsalo Experimental House by Alvar Aalto.

From this project, we are able to identify master architects such as Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe and their works. We also understand the basic architectural compositons of solids, planes, lines and frames. Lastly, we are able to ‘diagram’ and analyse architectural work of selected architect. This project had taught us more about the basic architectural elements.
SITE VISIT: KUALA SELANGOR NATURE PARK
PROJECT 2A: PAVILION AT KUALA SELANGOR NATURE PARK (GROUP)
Before we proceed to our next project for this subject, we had a trip to Kuala Selangor Natural Park. The main objective was to analyse this place and the next project is related to this site analysis. We were divided into several groups according to site given such as swamp, forest, and hill. Then, we were given a character as our client to build a pavilion and retreat house for her. My partner and I got a widow as our client's character and a forest to be analysed. These are some photos about our site visit:

For the second project, based on our analysis at Kuala Selangor Nature Park, we had to design a pavilion for the purpose of relaxing or contemplation. This pavilion should include the activities of resting, meditation, observation, viewing and etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated with the design. This pavilion should be corresponding to our given site which is the forest. The objective of this project is to generate form and space through architectural conceptualization, with emphasis on exploring the user requirement and simple spatial organization skills and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. We also needed to show the importance of using the crafting and making drawings and models as a critical design tool as part of the design process.

PROJECT 2B: RETREAT HOUSE AT KUALA SELANGOR NATURE PARK (INDIVIDUAL)
For the final project which is project 2B, we were required to further develop our project 2A into an individual project which is a retreat house at Kuala Selangor for our character which is a widow. A retreat house denotes ‘place affording peace, quiet, privacy and security’ where its occupant would reside for a short period of time. The retreat house that I had to build is function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, cleansing, cooking, storage and such within the built up space of 150 square meter. The relationship between my design and the context is important in making the retreat unique to its landscape and activity.
The objective of this project is:
• To introduce the notions of concepts, program and process in architectural design
• To introduce students’ to the understanding of user specific design requirements
• To introduce the notions of space, form and function in architectural design
• To introduce awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis

This is the first conceptual model that I present to the lecturer. Overall, he satisfied with the design but need to improve the spatial organization and the opening of the house. I also had to create the air ventilation system between the house and the surrounding.

This is the final model that I submitted for my presentation. This house got more opening compared to previous conceptual model. I also reconsidered the size of the spaces to make it possible for two persons only and avoid the dead space. Then, I organized the private and public space well as it is supposed to be.

In conclusion, this project allowed me to interpret and analyse simple site context. I also can interpret and analyse client’s character and needs in relation to the design of a small building. Lastly, I am able to design a simple building type that meets user requirements and respect site context that balances both internal (architectural spaces/layout/circulation) and external (aesthetics and forms) design values. This project explores the relationship between architectural tectonics, functional space and context in architecture.
