Compilation of projects that I have done during this semester

For this project, in a group of six, we were required to choose a building as our case study. We chose Setia City Mall for our case study. We chose this building because it has all the required building services components installed in the building. Then, we had to perform a thorough study on all services systems such as:

water supply system
electrical supply system
sewerage, sanitary & drainage system
mechanical transportation system
mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning system
fire protection system

We had to provide brief explanation on how the building services components function. This explanation shall be in qualitative form and therefore no calculation is required. Finally, we had to summarize the systems in diagrammatic form and compiled into an A4 report together with 2 sheets of A2-size project summary.

The objectives of this project are:

To introduce students to the basic principles, process and equipment of various building services systems through real life project (experiential learning).
To expose students to the integration of various building services systems in a building.
To allow students to demonstrate their understanding of building services systems
To develop students’ understanding and familiarity on the drawing conventions and standards for different building services systems

From this project, I learnt how to:

Identify and understand relevant information related to water and electrical supply, sewerage, mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning as well as fire protection systems.
Understand how each building services functions including the connections and position of different parts equipment.
Understand and explain the principles and systems as well as space implications and regulations related to different building services.

This project is related to the our studio design project in semester 2 which relates to a domestic size building (i.e. a retreat house, etc.). We were expected to demonstrate our understanding of building services by proposing and designing the most appropriate systems for the building which include:

electrical supply system (including split unit air-cond)
cold water and hot water supply system
sewerage and sanitary system
drainage system

Therefore we were required to produce appropriate drawings and diagrams which include specifications, symbols, legends, images, texts, etc. to describe the planning and installation of all the building services. Additionally, we might also include specific clauses from the Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL)

The objectives of this project are:

To develop students understanding and knowledge of building services systems in design and construction.
To apply appropriate building services system and solution for a specific design.
To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of applicability of specific building services systems in the design in response to practical considerations.
To develop students’ ability to resolve issues related to specific building services systems.

Identify relevant information related to water supply, liquid waste disposal, mechanical air-conditioning, fire safety and vertical transportation system.
Describe the planning of building services within the total design and construction process.
Describe the installation of building services within the total design and construction process.
