ARCHITECTURE HISTORY & CULTURE

Compilation of projects that I have done during this semester
PROJECT: PRECEDENT STUDY

This project focuses on investigating historical works to enrich architectural design and ideas. Through the study of existing buildings, I was  able to inform and expand my own architectural vocabulary and develop design concepts. In a group of 4, my friends and I were required to conduct analysis on specific building through drawing, model-making, written and verbal presentations. After a discussion, we decided to choose Hagia Sophia in Istanbul as our study building.

What we need to do?

After we choosed a building, we need to produce an essay that represent the building. We were asked to include:

  • Who is the architect?

  •  Where and when was the building built?

  • What is the form, or shape of the building?

  • What is the function or purpose of the building? 

  • What materials / methods are used for construction? 

  • What makes your building historically significant / meaningful? 

  • How does the building reflect the spirit of the time and place for which it was built?

Second Task - Individual Board

Firstly, we need to do a research about:

  • Plan to section

  • Unit to whole

  • Repetitive to unique

  • Additive and subtractive

  • Symmetry and balance

  • Geometry

  • Hierarchy

  • Public vs Private

  • Circulation

  • Massing

  • Structure

  • Natural light

So, we divided each person to select 3 topics above to do a further research and put it into our individual board. I selected hierarchy, circulation and plan to section for this task.

Final Task - Woodwork

Lastly, we were asked to produce a woodwork from balsa wood. In this task, we need to choose any part of the building that we think important to be shown. So, we choose plan view and front view of the building because of they are lot of architectural perspective that can be shown from these views.
